Ok this is for a friend of mine...
Anyone here instate have any "expertise" in trannys? Basically I am having issues setting the torque converter in the tranny for some weird reason and have NO idea what is wrong. It indexes on partially but won't go in the final 1/2" or so. Traded in the t/c for a new one to see if that is a factor but still nothing. Anyone around here willing to take a look at it for me? I don't have a couple hundred bucks to throw at a shop to do this for me so any help would be appreciated!
It's a 5r55e by the way.
And I don't want to rip this one apart because... a) Transmissions are complicated... and b) it's a warrantied transmission and if I open it I lose that.

hey brian, have you tried putting the old one back in just to eliminate one thing from another??? in other words just to make sure its the TQ and not the input shaft??? also, i'm sure you already know this but, you have to spin it back and forth while you push it in at the same time? sorry if i offend you with that question. (just trying to help a brother out).

No offense taken. He has done the whole spin back and forth and nothing is moving. It goes on partially and then it stopps. His buddies dad is gonna take a look at it later tonight and see what he thinks.

I am wary about pushing on it with a big force because according to everyone, it should go on fairly easy, and I don't want to damage the pump gear inside. I really have no idea what is wrong with it... new tranny and I have been at it every night since wednesday, even changed out the tq for a new one and nothing. I've spun left, right, fast, slow, sitting down, standing up, patting my belly and rubbing my head... basically everything and nothing. I would take it back to the shop but I am at work/school pretty much all day every day of the week and have no time to go by there... not to mention no vehicle.

I've noticed that there are differences between older/newer TCs. The 'flat' that is machined on the end that engages with the pump is not as deep on some compared to others. IF you have the old TC, I would compare that to the new TC. The TC should almost rub the inside of the tranny bellhousing when its in all the way. It will end up getting pulled out a little once its bolted to the Flexplate.

Also, if its a rebuilt unit, the front pump gear could be installed backwards. That might cause this problem. Its no big deal to pull out the front pump. Just make sure you do it standing the tranny up so everything doesn't fall out. he he no worries....

Oops... disregard the last post. Shine a flashlight into the front pump between the outer shaft and the seal and look for (2) 'flats' that the TC would fit into.

I can see the two flats for the t/c to slide into... I am just confused... it almost seems like the smaller splines are not going on... Thanks for the help, I am starting to understand this a little better... And thanks again by the way for the power steering rack I picked up from you guys at the Swap Meet!
