I need to purchase a carb for my Patelli built Chevy 350. I was told a 750cfm with a vacuum secondary. Can I just get one from Jegs, should I call Jet Performance? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Josh, Jim did not make any suggestions or I would have. He just said get a 750cfm carb for it so I figured I would ask on RDC.

I run a 750 Holley double pumper. Dave Ashley did the set up on it and Dave strongly recommends Vac carbs too. I have only used the one carb. Dave of course has about 25 yrs experience to draw form when he does a set up. I am really happy with mine. I have now gotten OK at choosing power valves and jets.

Its really cool having some one like Dave to help. The guy can tell you over the phone which way to go with the valves and jets by hearing it idle or drive by over the phone! I would love to say more but the rest is an Enduro secrete that I can’t let out!

I use to dream of fuel injection but now that I understand what is happening with a carb, I wouldn’t change.

Go with a Holley.

pro-systems carbs are by far the best i`ve ever used on any vehicle, their prices are very close to what other carbs shops get and their worth every penny.

give pat a call at 727-490-5717, their out of michigan.

do yourself a favor and call john at c&j carbs... he is crazy smart and he will ask you questions that you don't even think relate to a carb... he has done the carbs on the race truck and we don't even have to adjust the idle when we get it back, that's how good he is... he is very reasonably priced and he is in socal.

Were it me I'd look for someone who can do a good job with a Q-jet. That's likely a very unpopular opinion. Holleys are great race carbs. Both the Q-jet and the AFB beat them for daily driveability and mileage. Would not use an AFB b/c of the fuel bowl location.
Boils down to how you want to use the truck.

i agree that the quadra-junk is a great carb, but i think in an off road app, it might be to touchy to be reliable.

Crawlers seem to prefer them for their small, tall, centrally located fuel bowl w/ jets in the bottom. Deals with high angularity way better than a Holley does. Only potential problem I can see is control of the fuel in the bowl, and Q-jets, unlike most other carbs, come with fuel bowl stuffers. I liken them to being more like a Weber in that regard.

q-jets are fine in stock applications but if you have something with some ponys a holley is the only way to go... and if you set up a holley right(c&j) it will never skip a beat.

I have heard good things about C&J and there is also a shop in Chino called "Carb Shop" there number is 909 947 3575. They did some machining for me on my carb that Dave told me to have done before he could work his magic.

We had C&J setup the carb on the Camburg ranger for our GT-40 302 and were very happy with it. It ran awesome, never stumbled and we never had to touch it.

I've seen Q-jets work well on some pretty Hi-Po engines. Just not in the dirt. I have no idea if it would work, work well, or not. Like I said at the beginning, I doubt it's a popular opinion.

This is very good advise! Ollie gave me his number and I tried him out and had the same luck. The truck ran great all the time, Bumps, flat, uphill, high elevation etc.

The Carb Shop did a holley 750 double pumper for me that works really good-never bobbles in the rough stuff and works good off camber-and there is no sucker pump on it. Interesting thing- even though it's a double pumper, it uses side-hung float bowls-which Carb Shop said works better off-road for flooding reasons.
Good luck!

It's not off-road related, but I went to the drags yesterday and most the muscle car guys were running Holley's. Demon carbs came in a close second. I believe it's more in the setup, though.

I've been wondering about the Holley Truck Avenger too. I need to buy a carb for an 84 Bronco with a 351w & C-6

has anyone out there used the Truck Avenger?

My buddy used a truck avenger on his 360 in his cherokee rockcrawler. It worked great. Now he has an injected 454 though.

We run an unmodified Holley HP 650 on our ~520 HP 4.5L V6 and it has never missed a beat once. We were going to use quickfuel in KY or a similar place to have it modified for off-road, but it hasn't proven necessary. It comes stock WITHOUT the choke housing and with mechanical secondaries. All we've done is fart around with the jetting and idle circuits (four of them, by the way) . It was way more expensive than a stock Holley, but it was worth it IMHO. Good luck.

How well do the edelbrock vac sec carbs work for off road racing? I had one on my 76 blazer that worked flawlessly for normal 4 wheeling for 10 years without a single problem.

We put a truck avenger on our pre-runner and so far no problems. It is not as tunable as the douple pumpers so I would not recommend them on a full blown race buggy or truck

steve - if i were buying a new carb for my bronco i would buy it straight from c&j... that way it is perfect the first time and you don't have to worry about adjusting anything!!!
