I have a leak that I can't find on my tranny. I don't have much experience with a C4 and am wondering if there is a breather somewhere or something else that I may be over looking. All the seals have been replaced and with street use I have no leaks, but off-road I end up with fluid everywhere underneath. I added a temp gage to monitor overheating and it has never run hotter than 180 (not sure what running temp should be, though). Any help is greatly appreciated.
Oh and its a 94 fully built Ranger with a 4.0 and a 2 piece drive line.

you need to clean it off and run it and see where its coming from. if its coming out of the bell housing it could be a pump seal or converter seal. could be a pan gasket, could be a shift shaft seal, tail shaft seal. it shouldnt be that hard to track down once you clean it off and run it for a while.

I've tried that route. But, no leaks when driving in normal conditions. Unfortunatley, Its all over the place by the time the leak happens from running it hard and can't pin point it.

I have a C4 Ranger and i had the same problem until we put it right side up! But seriously the breather is on top of the trans about straight up from the kickdown servo. My stock breather leaked until I ran a piece of hose to higher ground.

Also, dont overlook the dipstick tube, I have seen them crack and leak only when the fluid is splashing around on rough terrain.

Hope that helps,
Tim

look into your fluid level, if it's a little too high it can blow out crazy places, including the vent and front seal. your dipstick may be off so you have to look closer. the fluid should be even with the oil pan rail. this is kind of tough to check, so get creative.

Thanks everyone. I think we got it figured out.
I have a fancy aftermarket plastic dipstick with a braided steel casing, which I was just educated on how accurate they aren't. So I took it to a tranny shop and he said the same thing as hoeker. Probably over filled and blowing all over when heated up and bounced around. Anyway, we're draining it and starting over.
