welding to a bolt

I am going to be remounting my bump stops so that they hit the upper control arm instead of off the lower arm and want the bump to hit on the bolt that attaches the control arm to the spindle. I have seen in the past people have welded a pad on a nut and its worked but i willneed to weld the pad on the the head of the bolt. Im gonna use a grade 8 or f911 but when welding the pad tot he bolt am I going to loose some of the bolts integrity? will the bolt be weaker?

yes you will be removing the heat treatment.

Alright so my next question is would it be a bad idea to run the bolt from the bottom of the spindle up so that i would have the head of the bolt on the bottom with the threads coming out of the uniball and a nut for tightening hte bolt and the a second nut to weld the pad on.

Seems to me that if there is any heat-treat in the nut that you'll destroy it too. If a suspension nut isn't heat-treated in some manner, why are you using it?

Can you make the pad bolt onto the arm in some other place (new holes & fastners) and bridge over the head of the bolt in question ? Or maybe you can make the pad such that the nut or bolt holds it in place w/o being welded to it?

the nut doesnt hold on the suspension...you use a longer bolt through the spindle, put a nut on it and torque it...with the left over thread you screw on the welded nut/plate, its not an integral nut...it just takes a beating so it is getting beat ONTO the bolt.

That is the exact way I ran mine . Just made the bolt a half inch longer than nec and ran the extra nut with the pad welded to it at the end past the fubctioning nut . I also made sure it had good contact with the primary nut as not to mess up the end of the bolt .

OK, that wasn't clear to me from B4. The anal part of me still wants a better solution though.
